strange similarities...

While conducting research into the life of artist Vincent Van Gogh I surprisingly uncovered some eerie similarities between myself and the tortured genius. I'll list them:

- we are both Dutch
- we are both fascinated by and in love with Japanese art, culture & people
- we both love God and are burdened by social justice; especially justice for the poor
- both have lived in poverty ourselves
- both highly emotional & intense
- never able to excel at or keep "regular jobs"
- only fulfilled by working at our art
- both described by others as being selfless, compassionate and idealistic
- favorite color - yellow
- hold a strong belief that the Bible should be taken literally and that most ordinary church practices are in error and contrary to the teachings of Jesus
- both determined to give happiness by creating beauty
- live sacrificially for God and others
- and very much like Van Gogh's "post-impressionistic" works, my writing is not based on painting an accurate depiction of life for my readers, but rather my writing takes a much more philosophical and introspective approach...painting a storyline from my own perspective of how I view the world.

I sincerely hope the likenesses end there for this artistic genius was also emotionally disturbed and tormented for much of his adult life which ended in suicide.

It has been said that there cannot be great art without great suffering - I can attest to that...the greatest of all of course is Christ!

Van Gogh's love and passion are best demonstrated in his art but also in the over 700 letters that he wrote to his beloved brother Theo. You can read them online - click here.

the mystery of teardrops...

[an excerpt from my upcoming novel]

"Her salted tears poured out onto her cheeks like waves on the sand. Then even more ran down violently, more like the pulsating sheets of rainwater pouring out on the high, elongated windows of the East Hampton estate’s master bedroom. Isak Denison once wrote, “The cure for anything is salt water -sweat, tears, or the sea.” She had that quote written in her journal for years and she believed it in her heart of hearts, but never more than right at this moment. There was a great mystery inside a teardrop. A gentle mixing of salt and water, chemically balanced. Just as salt water was healing to an open wound, tears were healing to a broken heart. And just as the expulsion of sweat from the body is healing as it releases all those poisons the person had twirling around inside of him, the mystery of teardrops is in how they seem to expel all the toxic emotions twirling around inside of one’s mind." - Christiaan Keaton © 2009

my love affair with all things Japanese...

It all started with my mother. She too was obsessed with the Japanese culture, I believe even before she met one of her best friends from Japan, Aki Sako. Our home was saturated with Japanese culture, art, cuisine, you name it...and I was hooked.

Now, whether it's music, or movies, clothing, art or even furniture, I prefer it "made in Japan" to any other. Here are some of my favs:

Anime - Bleach is one of my favs, but there are so many others

This is of course but a mere sampling of what I love so much about the Japanese and their culture. But it goes way deeper than this. As Americans, most of us who have never been exposed to the Eastern culture cannot understand another way. But the Western way of thinking and doing is so foreign from the East (pun intended)...and culture has nothing to do with faith or relationship - or does it? Here is an interesting read on faith and culture from an Eastern perspective (from a Chinese Christian).

I have been blessed with opportunities to study Asian cuture on all levels and in all areas with the writing of my new book. It has been such a beautiful, eye-opening and mind-opening experience. One day I hope to move to Japan, to live and write there and collaborate with some Japanese comic artists, to turn my novel into a series of Graphic Novels - that is my dream. I'm using every fiber of my existance to make it my reality! ;)

writing, writing, writing is my life...

Here I sit, day after day, night after night, surrounded by comic books, anime, chibis and the like. I pour my heart out on keyboard into Word doc - blood, sweat and tears...

I'm near completion of my first novel...she goes off to the publisher at the end of July. Just edits and polishing left to do. I’m very excited and I hope you will all enjoy it half as much as I enjoyed the journey it took me through. What a wonderful and horrible process writing is: God burdens you with a story and you get to labor out the details…much like giving birth!
